the programme

Public Health is the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health.

Public Health is not only concerned with maintenance of health by reducing or eliminating disease risks and environmental health hazards, improving social conditions, and encouraging healthy behaviours and lifestyles, it also encompasses the distribution and optimal management of healthcare services.

The course will provide students from a wide range of health and related professional backgrounds with the knowledge and skills in public health sciences and related disciplines which will make them more effective contributors in their field of healthcare.

This programme is not only available in the conventional mode of learning but also in the ODL mode of learning. Designed especially for students with employment, family or other commitments, the ODL mode of learning provides flexibility and convenience for the student to schedule their studies around these obligations and around their lifestyle while receiving all the support and services available, the same as the on-campus students.

What is ODL?

Open and distance learning provides working professionals with an alternative to conventional programmes at universities, giving them the opportunity to earn a university degree without interrupting their career.

As Malaysia’s first and most established private medical and health sciences university with 33 years of dedicated focus in healthcare education, IMU offers a few postgraduate programmes via this learning mode with students having the opportunity to benefit from all the teaching and support that the University has to offer.

Benefits of ODL

Designed especially for students with employment, family or other commitments, this mode of learning provides flexibility and convenience for the student to schedule their studies around these obligations and around their lifestyle – allowing a student to plan and pace their own learning at a time and learning environment that is most suitable for the student. It also saves students from spending time travelling to the university, the costs of travelling to the university and the costs of staying near the university.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods include a series of lectures (Powerpoint lectures, video lectures and i-lectures) supplemented by online discussions, forums and quizzes. For each subject taken, students will be part of a student online community. Students will also be assigned a mentor who will be available to answer any questions and provide feedback on their progress.

Students will be assessed fully online via the in-course assessment assignments and end of module assessment assignment so they don’t need to be at the University to sit for their exams. They will the receive their grades and feedback online.

In order to do this, students will be required to have a desktop/laptop, internet connection, a headset and webcam to participate in online tutorials and other group activities, access to standard office software – such as Microsoft Word and Excel, plus any standard browser, such as Chrome, Edge or Firefox and Skype for certain online sessions.

Support from University

ODL students are fully registered student of the University with all of the support and services available to them, the same as the on-campus students. Technical support will also be provided if students have difficulty in accessing the e-learning platform.

Lim Hui Li
Rather than just being theory-based and book-learning based which I am used to, the learning materials utilised practical field visits, presentations and open discussions with lecturers and colleagues alike which I found extremely enlightening. As a student, I was encouraged to tailor my discussions, presentations, and arguments drawing from my experiences and background in Microbiology and Psychology. The diverse background of MSPH students from different parts of the world that included scientists, medical doctors and lab specialists allowed for a multidimensional learning environment.

It was a sweet and sour journey for the past 2.5 years in completing IMU’s Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) programme. The online platform and course outlines were almost seamless and easy to follow through, even for a tech-dummy mid-40s woman who has left university 20 years ago! I am extremely grateful for how flexible and accommodating the ODL option is towards my work schedule. Don’t get me wrong, this journey wasn’t a walk in the park. Balancing a thesis whilst in the midst of working as a Housemen/ Intern Doctor, working 60-70 hours a week was no easy feat. I am thankful that the faculty within the programme were beyond compassionate and accommodating towards my needs. This journey is a testament that you can achieve anything as long as you keep moving forward.

Undertaking the open and distance learning mode provided me with the flexibility and opportunity to obtain my master’s at my own pace and convenience. Although rigorous and demanding right from the start, the support provided by the lecturers and the university, supplemented with online forums and discussions with peers greatly aided in the completion of this course.
