Postgraduate research forms a major and expanding part of the IMU’s academic development. Working for a research degree gives students the opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge of a discipline and to become familiar with current techniques and methodologies.
The University prides itself on the facilities and support it provides to research students and on the calibre and dedication of its academic, clinical and technical staff. IMU researchers produced 221 publications in 2015, of which 151 (68.3%) were in indexed journals and 20 were books or book chapters. Of the indexed papers, 48 were in Tier 1, 39 in Tier 2, 33 in Tier 3 and 9 in Tier 4 journals. The total impact factor (IF) obtained for the indexed papers was 227.143.
The University allocates more than RM1 million internal funds for research every year. Alongside this commitment, external funding has increased dramatically from funding bodies such as Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) in recent years. Our researchers have received funding for collaborative research projects in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, breast cancer, infectious diseases and environmental health.
“The IMU postgraduate programme leading to the MSc and PhD in Medical and Health Sciences is primarily obtained through research. Research areas include bioactive molecules, vaccine and drug development, therapeutics, pharmaceutics, cellular mechanisms and molecular basis of pathogenesis, clinical research, community based health issues, nutrition and dietetics, behavioural studies, and medical education. Supervisors are highly experienced faculty members with impressive track record in research and international recognition.”
