About

the programme

Postgraduate research forms a major and expanding part of the IMU’s academic development. Working for a research degree gives students the opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge of a discipline and to become familiar with current techniques and methodologies.

The University prides itself on the facilities and support it provides to research students and on the calibre and dedication of its academic, clinical and technical staff. In addition, IMU researchers have published their findings in high imapct journals.

The University allocates more than RM1 million internal funds for research every year. Alongside this commitment, external funding has increased dramatically from funding bodies such as Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) in recent years. Our researchers have received funding for collaborative research projects in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, breast cancer, infectious diseases and environmental health.

Dr Yie Kie Chong
"Trained as an engineer, Dr Ewa Choy transitioned into stem cell research, blending biomedical science and engineering in her role as a research scientist at CryoCord Sdn Bhd. Keen to grow in the industry, she seized the opportunity to pursue an Industrial PhD at IMU. Her research focused on developing a cell-based gene therapy using genetically modified stem cells to treat neovascularisation. The therapy showed promising results both in vitro and in vivo, offering a safer, longer-lasting alternative to current treatments. A patent has been filed and papers are underway..." Read More
Dr Ewa Choy
"Zhang Shiming completed his PhD in Medical & Health Sciences (Pharmaceutical Chemistry) at IMU, where he explored the therapeutic potential of natural compounds like Swietenine and red ginger. His work led to publications in high-impact journals and a pending patent. In May 2024, Zhang began a dual role as postdoctoral fellow and assistant professor at Hunan University, China, focusing on molecular biology and medicinal chemistry..." Read More

Throughout my postgraduate experience, there were its ups and downs. I will always be grateful for the guidance and support I received from all of my favorite IMU professors, and I will persevere on my path with tenacity and resolve. I am pleased to be able to use the information and expertise I obtained from IMU into my research endeavor. Although the postgraduate trip has not been simple, I am thankful to have had the chance to experience it, and all the information I have learnt along the way has in fact enhanced my life experience.

It is not easy at all doing postgraduate research; you will have to start everything from scratch, referring to hundreds or even thousands of works of literature to pave your way towards your objectives. The research project should be novel and able to contribute to global knowledge and, of course, ideally can be completed within the allocated time frame. Whenever I encounter problems during research, “barrier is staircase” is a quote that I always try to remind myself of during hard times. I was fortunate to have a highly supportive and well-experienced supervisory team (A/Prof Dr Ooi Ing Hong and A/Prof Dr Ng Chew Hee) throughout my MSc journey. We often discussed my research progress, and they always gave me suggestions and motivation to push me further and higher.
