What is the difference between a dietician and a nutritionist? Nutrition is the science that deals with the study of foods and nutrients, and their effect on an individual. On the other hand, Dietetics is the practical application of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of disease.
Graduates of IMU’s Dietetics with Nutrition Degree programme will be able to work as dietitians in the government and private sectors, providing healthcare services, food service management, and counselling in disease management and prevention.
This 4-year programme provides an advantage for employment as students are exposed to a variety of work placements such as food service, clinical dietetics and community dietetics.
The BSc(Hons) Dietetics with Nutrition programme in IMU has beenawarded the International Accreditation for Education Programs for Dietitian-Nutritionists conferred by the International Confederation of Dietetics Association (ICDA). This ICDA award is a recognition that the IMU dietetics with nutrition curriculum has met the standards to produce competent dietitians upon graduation. The award will also enhance the international reputation of the programme in member countries of ICDA. We are the first university in the world to receive this inaugural award by ICDA.
Hoh Hui Shan (better known as Shan) has always been active in extra-curricular activities when she was young. She was also a state swimmer for 6 years. Even now, she is still actively participating in races – swimming, running, aquathlon, and triathlon relays.
Monisha Mohanan Nair found her interest in dietetics during her school days when she came across the word Dietitian. This has prompted her to research further about the profession as well as universities in Malaysia that were offering this programme.
Nutrition and Dietetics changed Georgen Thye’s life, helping him lose 30kg and keeping it off. He had also witnessed countless patients suffering from chronic diseases mostly caused by an unhealthy lifestyle in the first four years of his career working in a hospital as a clinical dietitian.
There are two things that made dietetics interesting to me: the challenge that always bring me beyond my limits and the fun working along with a group of passionate lecturers and students. Studying dietetics in IMU made me realised that nutrition is not just about food, but it comes along with human and care.
I enjoy the hands-on and experiential learning as it really helps me learn better and apply what I’ve been learning. Cooking sessions, field trip to University Malaya and group presentations on international cultures were very insightful and enjoyable learning experiences.
The knowledge and training experiences I gained at IMU provided a solid foundation for me to become a Clinical Dietitian. The faculty is dedicated to providing a supportive environment. Not only did it prepare me for the dietetic profession, it helped me to develop interpersonal skills and expanded my horizons.
