It was 9 years ago when my mother discovered that there was a hump on my back. She flew into panic mode and was afraid that I would resemble the main character Quasimodo from “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”.
Benjamin Loh (better known as Ben) was ready for a change in career after over ten years of lecturing in Media / Communications. He chose to study chiropractic as he was always interested in studying something related to healthcare.
When I graduated from my A-Levels in 2010, little did I know I will be treating patients 5 years later at the University that has taught me so much and shaped me to become who I am today. I remember the first time I passed by IMU, that place just intimidates me as I thought about how stressed it must be to study in a medical university.
Maybelle Heng have always aspired to be a healthcare professional. A strong belief in the chiropractic philosophy that health comes from within and from the choices we make each day had been the impetus for Maybelle to study chiropractic as it make her feel empowered to be in the front row of preventative health.
The lecturers in the chiropractic faculty were all passionate in teaching and guiding all of the students since the first day of Semester 1. They were always there for us whenever we need help on academic or personal matters. Their patience and willingness in sharing and teaching their expertise have influenced and imparted great values in me, aspiring me to become a better person, and most importantly, a professional chiropractor.
Under the IMU Chiropractic programme, we had to complete a few hundred clinic hours under supervision (forgot the exact number of hours). This helped me have a feel of what working in a clinic would be like. I also treasure the evidence-based approach at IMU as it has helped me evaluate what treatment options are safe, critically examine the evidence for health supplements, etc.
IMU prepares me well for the work that I am currently doing, especially the ability to work in the Chiropractic clinic with Medical doctors and Chinese Medicine Practitioners who were all studying in the same campus, giving her the opportunity to inter- refer among different healthcare providers – these are definitely beneficial in preparing her to work in an integrated setting.
