As long as new strains of diseases emerge, causing a detrimental effect on the health of our communities, biomedical science will play an important role in healthcare delivery.
Correct diagnosis of disease is imperative. Patients’ lives rely greatly on the results of clinical laboratory investigations conducted by capable biomedical scientists.
Similarly, biomedical scientists are essential in the field of biomedical research, a sector at the forefront of the Malaysian government’s push into developed nation status. It is also a field of endeavour that first world nations put a premium on.
As such, biomedical science is a profession that will continue to expand especially in Malaysia where there has been rapid growth in the healthcare system.
At IMU, the biomedical science degree programme is mapped to the international standards set by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), UK.
I did event planning and the biggest lesson learnt from organising orientation for my juniors was working and communicating with all the people coming from different programmes, background, attitude and style.
I have completed the IMU biomedical science degree, followed by IMU Master’s degree in the field of pharmaceutical science research. Instead of continuing onto the obtaining a PhD, I have decided to accept a new challenge.
I am Brandon Mong Guo Jie. I graduated with a BSc (Hons) from IMU majoring in Biomedical Science and was the batch representative of BM1/11.
Currently doing a research project is on developing natural product based nanoformulations to treat biofilms formed by bacteria.
A 2014 graduate of the IMU Biomedical Science programme, discovered his passion for neuroscience research in his final undergraduate year, during which he performed an internship with the Neurobiology and Genetics Group (NBGG), Universiti Putra Malaysia.
I am grateful that the Problem-based Learning (“PBL”) in IMU has provided a platform for me to think constructively, which has subsequently helped me in my career decisions. Active participation in extra-curriculum activities during my years in IMU also honed my negotiation, communication and project management skills.
I am grateful that I chose biomedical science degree at IMU as it equipped me with fundamental laboratory skills, communication skills as well as problem solving skills which enabled me to cope with my research today.
The knowledge and hands-on experience in which I was provided in IMU was very much a blessing in helping me to adapt to the research world during my postgraduate era. Through its modules, projects and reports, it has trained me to pick up skills in the laboratory much faster. Hence, I was able to complete my research work for my Masters within an estimated duration of one and a half years, which gave me ample time to perfect my thesis write-up.
