About Open and Distance Learning (ODL)

What is ODL?
Open and distance learning provides working professionals with an alternative to conventional programmes at universities, giving them the opportunity to earn a university degree without interrupting their career.

As Malaysia’s first and most established private medical and health sciences university with 27 years of dedicated focus in healthcare education, IMU offers a few postgraduate programmes via this learning mode with students having the opportunity to benefit from all the teaching and support that the University has to offer.

Benefits of ODL
Designed especially for students with employment, family or other commitments, this mode of learning provides flexibility and convenience for the student to schedule their studies around these obligations and around their lifestyle – allowing a student to plan and pace their own learning at a time and learning environment that is most suitable for the student. It also saves students from spending time travelling to the university, the costs of travelling to the university and the costs of staying near the university.

Teaching Methods
Teaching methods include a series of lectures (Powerpoint lectures, video lectures and i-lectures) supplemented by online discussions, forums and quizzes. For each subject taken, students will be part of a student online community. Students will also be assigned a mentor who will be available to answer any questions and provide feedback on their progress.

Students will be assessed fully online via the in-course assessment assignments and end of module assessment assignment so they don’t need to be at the University to sit your exams. They will the receive their grades and feedback online.

In order to do this, students will be required to have a desktop/laptop, internet connection, a headset and webcam to participate in online tutorials and other group activities, access to standard office software – such as Microsoft Word and Excel, plus any standard browser, such as Chrome, Edge or Firefox and Skype for certain online sessions.

Support from University
ODL students are fully registered student of the University with all of the support and services available to them, the same as the on-campus students. Technical support will also be provided if students have difficulty in accessing the e-learning platform.

Students’ Testimonials

My love for research led me to peruse my master’s degree. The reputation of IMU being among the top universities of Malaysia and its graduate’s high employability rates grasped my attention. My expectations were not only met, they were surpassed, and I was sure that the skills I will learn here will provide me the much-needed edge in the competitive job market after my degree. The mixed-mode curriculum gave me the edge to learn with hands on the equipment and taught me to do independent research. The well-learned, hardworking and brilliant teachers for each course within the program made it a piece of cake for every student to learn the hard-learned instruments. The state of art laboratories and the guidance from the technical staff along with the supervisors made the learning much easier. The research component of the program gave me the real experience to independently devise an idea and to research it. I am currently enrolled in PhD program in Medicinal Chemistry in Monash University, Malaysia. I think the knowledge and expertise I learned in IMU during my MAPC degree provided me the much-needed edge in the current degree as most of my research work is based on the instrumentations I learned in IMU. Moreover, the critical thinking and reasoning I developed during the program in IMU, via the discussion among the students and teachers, has helped me and still assisting me in PhD. My research in Monash University focuses on the development of new synthetic routes for the preparation of 1,3,5-triazino-2,4-diamines and to evaluate their antiproliferative activity. I have developed a new synthetic strategy for the preparation of triazine-diamines using microwave assisted synthesis and multicomponent approach, which helped me synthesize novel compounds which showed selective anticancer activity towards breast cancer cells. My philosophy in life is to try and make a better change in the world; no matter how small and enjoy doing it.

I was attracted to International Medical University (IMU)’s small class sizes, friendly and competent faculty and staff, and brand new postgraduate program. IMU offered me an opportunity to learn and work in the laboratory with innovative equipment and technology. Along with the building came a faculty and staff that truly cared about your success and growth as a student. Being able to learn in small class sizes from the actual professor rather than teaching assistants allowed me to ask questions and understand the course material on a higher level. Establishing professional relationships with most of my professors gave me the chance to get involved in activities the department had to offer and this opportunity provided me with hands-on experience in a professional lab setting and the chance to work on a research team to develop my communication and presenting skills. All of the professors were very approachable and available out of the classroom to help students, even if they were not in office hours. They knew what skills were desired for jobs in the field or to apply to graduate/professional schools and made sure they did everything they could to help us achieve our goals. Throughout my education, there was a focus on presenting, scientific writing, and experimental skills I felt more than prepared and I was accepted into a number of great programs throughout the country. Just as great as the professors were my classmates. Everyone was always willing to help each other and work together, especially when things got tough. Through the department, I have met some of the most amazing friends that have helped get me to where I am. Overall, I loved my experience at IMU which had made me love chemistry even more and they are the reason I am the researcher, I am today.

International Medical University (IMU) has definitely been a defining part of my life.Teaching is more than just books and journal articles, and the professors in IMU understood that; the motivational support they indirectly exude has been monumental to my personal and academic growth. I would say that the student-lecturer the relationship is what makes study at IMU great . Throughout my time in IMU, I’ve always told people that our lecturers practice an open door policy. More than just being a lecturer, I would say that they are also a highly qualified mentor to us students. Additionally, the set of skills that I have obtained working on my research project alongside my supervisors has given me a solid advantage of experience.

I have learned so many things in IMU that helped and is still helping me in my academic life. IMU is a very welcoming place and it gives me the balance between international experience and a homely atmosphere. In addition to graduating with a Master’s degree, in IMU, I have also made new friends from different backgrounds and cultures. The classes in the first two semesters built up my knowledge and practical skills in pharmaceutical analysis, drug design and development. My Research Project was in the areas of pharmacokinetics and bioavailability in animals and I have gained essential quantitative research and problem solving skills during the Research Project. My ambition is to share my research experience and work alongside other researchers to discover and develop new drugs and therapies to improve the quality of life for the society.
